What is Coal Tar Pitch Roofing?
“Pitch” is the thick black substance that comes from the distillation of coal tar. Commonly referred to as “tar and gravel” roofing, coal tar pitch roofing falls under the larger umbrella of roofing systems known as built up roof membranes (BUR). More durable than other roofing materials — asphalt, EPDM, or TPO — its molecular structure provides a natural resistance to elements such as UV exposure, ponded water, insect damage, and much more. Coal tar roofing has a “self-healing” property that allows it to self-level, which means it can be used on roof slopes that are considered dead-level, or flat.
