What is a Modified Bitumen Roof?
Modified Bitumen Systems (MBS): One of the fastest growing roofing materials in the industry, MBS is considered a “hybrid” roofing system. It combines the extreme tensile strength found in built-up systems with the high expansion and contraction features of a single-ply roof; MBS roof systems consist of a base sheet (or ply sheet) and a waterproofing sheet.
Modified bitumen material is composed of polymer modified bitumen (tar, asphalt or plant resin) reinforced with layers of fabric (glass fiber, polyester, or a combination of the two). Some of the surfacing components used for application with MBS include granules, gravel, acrylic coatings, aluminum coatings, ballast, and metals.
Compatibility of all materials within the system should be discussed with a Master Roofing Contractor like Hi-Rise Commercial Roofing to ensure a stress-free installation. The application process of MBS is relatively involved and requires the technical arrangement of several components. When you call on Hi-Rise for your commercial roofing needs, we will review all options with you to determine the best fit for your roofing needs.
