What is a Mansard Roof?
The mansard style was brought to life in 17th century France, and quickly became a fashionable statement of its day. Two distinct traits define the mansard roof: steep sides and a double pitch. Essentially, a double-pitched roof consists of two surfaces which connect with ridge at the top. Often, mansards are confused with the “gambrel” roof style that is common with barns in North America, however, there are several distinctions that differentiate the two.
